By the Darood E Taj project · Arabic checked against several digital editions · Last updated
The Prophet ﷺ taught duas for worry, grief and distress. This page gives them in Arabic with Roman, Urdu and English, from the hadith and the Qur’an, each with its source and grading.
Duas are an act of worship and a comfort, and they do not replace care from a doctor or a counsellor. If anxiety or sadness is affecting your daily life, or you think you may harm yourself, please speak to a doctor or a trusted person, or call your local emergency number.

Duas from the Qur’an
These are words of the Qur’an that people turn to in hardship.
The same dua in the Qur’an (21:87)
Quranic: The words of Allah.
Wa Zan Nooni iz zahaba mughaadiban fazaanna al lan naqdira 'alaihi fanaanna al lan naqdira 'alaihi fanaadaa fiz zulumaati al laaa ilaaha illaaa Anta Subhaanaka innee kuntu minaz zaalimeen
And [mention] the man of the fish [i.e., Jonah], when he went off in anger and thought that We would not decree [anything] upon him. And he called out within the darknesses, "There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers."
“Allah is sufficient for us” (3:173)
Quranic: The words of Allah.
Those to whom people [i.e., hypocrites] said, "Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them." But it [merely] increased them in faith, and they said, "Sufficient for us is Allāh, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs."
“Our Lord, give us good in this world” (2:201)
Quranic: The words of Allah.
Wa minhum mai yaqoolu rabbanaaa aatina fid dunyaa hasanatawn wa fil aakhirati hasanatanw wa qinaa azaaban Naar
But among them is he who says, "Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire."
Duas and professional care together
Making dua, praying, remembering Allah and speaking to someone you trust are all part of coping. So is seeing a doctor or counsellor when you need one. Nothing in the sources on this page asks you to choose between them.
Questions about dua for anxiety
What is the dua for anxiety?
The Prophet ﷺ often said “Allahumma inni a‘udhu bika minal hammi wal hazan”, seeking refuge from worry and grief (Sahih al-Bukhari). It is on this page in Arabic with Roman, Urdu and English.
What is the dua for distress?
The Prophet ﷺ used to say “La ilaha illallahul ‘Azimul Halim ...” in times of distress (Sahih al-Bukhari 6346 and Sahih Muslim 2730). Other duas for distress are on this page too.
What is the dua of Yunus (Dhun-Nun)?
“La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu minaz zalimin”. The Prophet ﷺ said that no Muslim calls on Allah with it for anything except that Allah answers him (Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 3505). It is also in the Qur’an, 21:87.
Do these duas replace seeing a doctor?
No. Duas are worship and comfort, and seeking treatment is also encouraged. If anxiety or sadness is affecting your daily life, see a doctor or a trusted counsellor.
How often should I read them?
The hadith give no fixed number for these duas. Read them as often as you need, with attention to the meaning.
