What the Qur’an says
Allah says that He and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ, and then tells the believers to do the same.
Surah al-Ahzab, 33:56
Quranic: The words of Allah.
Indeed, Allāh confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [Allāh to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allāh to grant him] peace.
What the Prophet ﷺ said about it
This hadith is one of the best known on the subject. It is in Sahih Muslim.
Whoever sends blessings once
Prophetic: Taught by the Prophet ﷺ, with the hadith reference.
Man salla ‘alayya wahidatan sallallahu ‘alayhi ‘ashra
Whoever sends blessings upon me once, Allah sends blessings upon him ten times.
Which darood should I read?
Any sincere salawat on the Prophet ﷺ is worth reading. These pages give the texts people look for most, each with its source.
- Short darood sharifThe quick forms, such as “Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam”, and the opening of the Darood Ibrahimi.
- Darood IbrahimiThe darood the Prophet ﷺ taught his Companions, read in the final sitting of the prayer.
- Darood E TajThe well-known Salawat of the Crown, with Arabic, Urdu, English, Roman, Hindi and Telugu.
When and how often to read it
The Qur’an and the hadith on this page set no fixed number of times. What they ask for is that the believer sends salawat often and sincerely. These are the occasions the sources mention.
- In every prayer: the Darood Ibrahimi is read in the final sitting. Scholars differ on whether this is required or recommended, so follow your own school or ask your scholar.
- After hearing the adhan: the Prophet ﷺ said to repeat what the muezzin says, then send salawat upon him, then ask Allah to grant him al-Wasilah (Sahih Muslim 384).
- When his name is mentioned: the Prophet ﷺ called the one who does not send salawat when his name is mentioned a miser (Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 3546, graded hasan sahih by al-Tirmidhi and sahih by al-Albani).
- On Friday: see the next section.
Darood sharif on Friday
Abu Dawud (1047) records that the Prophet ﷺ said Friday is among the best of your days, so send salawat upon him often on it, because it is presented to him. The Companions asked how, since his body would have decayed, and he said that Allah has forbidden the earth to consume the bodies of the prophets.
Scholars have graded this hadith differently: al-Albani and Muhammad Muhyi al-Din Abdul Hamid graded it sahih, Shu‘ayb al-Arna’ut graded it sahih li-ghayrihi, and Zubair Ali Zai graded it da‘if. It is widely quoted for sending more salawat on Fridays, and the Qur’an’s general command in 33:56 does not depend on it.
There is no fixed number for Friday either. Read what you can, and read it with attention.
Questions about darood sharif
What is darood sharif?
Darood sharif is salawat on the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: a prayer asking Allah to send blessings and peace upon him. Allah commands it in the Qur’an (33:56), and the Prophet ﷺ taught the believers how to do it.
What is the difference between darood, durood and salawat?
They are the same thing. Darood and durood are two spellings of a Persian word used in Urdu, Hindi and Punjabi. Salawat is the Arabic plural of salat, the word the Qur’an uses.
Is there a fixed number of times to read darood sharif?
The Qur’an verse and the hadith on this page give no fixed number. Many people set a number for themselves to stay regular. That is a personal habit rather than a rule.
Which darood is the most complete?
The Darood Ibrahimi is the form the Prophet ﷺ taught when his Companions asked him how to send blessings upon him (Sahih al-Bukhari 3370). It is the one recited in the prayer.
Is the short darood sharif enough?
Short forms such as “Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam” are salawat on the Prophet ﷺ and are widely used in daily life. For the prayer, recite the Darood Ibrahimi.
