How We Check the Text

One wrong vowel can change a word. This is how the Arabic on the library pages is checked, and what has not been checked yet.

The method

No Arabic on these pages is typed by hand. Each text is fetched from several independent digital editions and compared letter by letter and vowel by vowel (fatha, damma, kasra, sukun, shadda and tanween all count). The page shows the version on which the editions agree.

Only typing conventions are treated as equal, such as the order of marks or two ways of spelling the same word with the same vowels. Any other difference is listed and settled by hand. If the editions cannot be reconciled, the text is not published.

Sources that share an origin are not counted as independent. The strength of a text is the number of different origins that agree.

The sources used

  • The Qur’an: Tanzil (Uthmani), the Quran.com API, alquran.cloud, and the King Fahd Complex text. The Urdu is Fateh Muhammad Jalandhry and the English is Saheeh International, each checked across two sources.
  • Hadith: the sunnah.com text of the six books, HadeethEnc (Islamhouse), and Hisn al-Muslim.
  • Hadith gradings are quoted as the graders gave them, and where scholars disagree the page says so.

What has not been checked yet

These are digital editions. A computer cannot see a printed page, so a scholar still needs to compare each page with a printed edition. Until that is done, each text on the library pages says “Scholar review: not yet”.

Translations into Urdu and English are checked against the sources named on each page, but they are translations of meaning, and a native reviewer has not yet read them all. The Roman lines are a pronunciation aid written for this site.

Some texts are held back when the editions disagree and no printed source settles it. The Dua e Qunoot page is published from a printed-style source image (Tajweed Classes), read at 5× zoom, because the digital texts differ on a vowel in the last word (mulḥiq or mulḥaq). The image is small, so a few marks are not legible, and those are supplied by matching digital texts. The Arabic of the other qunut dua (the one taught to al-Hasan) is not published yet. The composed Salawat Darood Lakhi, Mahi, Khizri, Hazara, Pak and Shifa are not published either: their wording differs between sources, and for each there is only one digital typing or no scholarly source that prints the vowels.
