People looking for the short darood sharif (also chota darood sharif or small darood sharif) usually want a form that is quick to say and easy to remember. Here are the short forms in Arabic, with Roman, Urdu and English, and where each one comes from.

Short forms are fine for everyday remembrance. The form the Prophet ﷺ taught when his Companions asked how to send salawat upon him is the Darood Ibrahimi, and that is the one to recite in the prayer.

The short forms of darood sharif

The shortest is the phrase said whenever the Prophet’s name is mentioned. The second is the opening clause of the Darood Ibrahimi.

Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam

Standard phrase: The phrase said after the Prophet’s name.

    Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam

May Allah send blessings and peace upon him.

The opening of the Darood Ibrahimi

Prophetic: Taught by the Prophet ﷺ, with the hadith reference.

Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammadin wa ‘ala ali Muhammad

O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad,

How to use the short forms

Say the first phrase every time you hear or say the Prophet’s name. When writing, many hadith scholars preferred writing it out in full or using the sign ﷺ rather than letters such as “saw”.

The opening clause is often recited on its own as a quick darood. It is the first line of the full Darood Ibrahimi, which has two parts and is the form to use in the prayer.
