Allāh - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursī extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

What Ayatul Kursi says

The verse begins with the oneness of Allah: there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him. Everything in the heavens and on the earth belongs to Him.

It then says that no one can intercede with Him except by His permission, that He knows what is before and behind people while they encompass nothing of His knowledge except what He wills, and that His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth and their preservation does not tire Him. It ends by calling Him the Most High, the Most Great.

What the hadith say about reciting it

These reports are about the verse itself. Each gives the book, the narrator where the book gives one, and the grading as the source states it.

  • After the obligatory prayers: the Prophet ﷺ said that whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi right after each obligatory prayer will have nothing preventing him from entering Paradise except death (an-Nasa’i in al-Sunan al-Kubra, from Abu Umamah; graded sahih in the HadeethEnc collection, no. 10950).
  • Before sleep: the Prophet ﷺ confirmed what Abu Hurayrah had been told, that when he goes to bed and recites Ayat al-Kursi, a guardian from Allah will remain with him and Satan will not come near him until morning (Sahih al-Bukhari 2311, 3275 and 5010).

Reports you may have seen that are not sound

Two hadith often repeated about Ayat al-Kursi are graded da‘if (weak) by the scholars of hadith, so this page does not rely on them. One calls it the “master of the Qur’an” (Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 2878, graded da‘if by al-Albani and others). Another promises protection until evening for whoever recites it with the opening of Surah Ghafir in the morning (Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 2879, graded da‘if by al-Albani and others).
