The 4 Qul (char qul) are four short surahs of the Qur’an that each begin with the word Qul, “Say”: Surah al-Kafirun (109), al-Ikhlas (112), al-Falaq (113) and an-Nas (114). Many Muslims learn them as children and recite them in the morning, in the evening and before sleep.
The Arabic below is the Uthmani text of the Qur’an, compared letter by letter and vowel by vowel across four digital editions. The Urdu is Fateh Muhammad Jalandhry’s translation and the English is Saheeh International. The Roman is written for this site.

When the Prophet ﷺ recited them
These are the occasions in the hadith. Each is a report of what the Prophet ﷺ did or said, and none of them promises a particular result.
- Before sleep: when he went to bed each night, he would cup his hands, blow into them, recite Surah al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq and an-Nas, and wipe over as much of his body as he could, three times (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017).
- Morning and evening: he said to recite Surah al-Ikhlas and the two Mu‘awwidhatayn, al-Falaq and an-Nas, three times each morning and evening, and that they would suffice for everything (Sunan Abi Dawud 5082, graded hasan by al-Albani).
- Seeking refuge: Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri said the Prophet ﷺ used to seek refuge from the jinn and the evil eye until the two Mu‘awwidhatayn were revealed; then he took to them and left everything else (Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 2058, graded hasan gharib by al-Tirmidhi and sahih by al-Albani).
Questions about 4 qul
Which surahs are the 4 Qul?
Surah al-Kafirun (109), Surah al-Ikhlas (112), Surah al-Falaq (113) and Surah an-Nas (114). Each begins with the word Qul, which means “Say”.
What is the difference between 3 Qul and 4 Qul?
The 3 Qul are Surah al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq and an-Nas, which the hadith mention together. The 4 Qul add Surah al-Kafirun, which also begins with Qul.
Are the 4 Qul next to each other in the Qur’an?
No. They are surahs 109, 112, 113 and 114. People group them because each begins with Qul and each is short.
When should I read the 4 Qul?
The hadith on this page mention reciting al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq and an-Nas in the morning, in the evening and before sleep. You can read the four surahs at any time.
Is the 4 Qul for protection from the evil eye (nazar)?
The hadith say the Prophet ﷺ sought refuge in Allah by al-Falaq and an-Nas. Read them as a prayer of seeking refuge in Allah, with trust in Him. They are not a charm, and no result is guaranteed.
