How to read it

  1. 1

    Make your intention

Sit in a clean place facing the Qibla if you can and make the intention to send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ. The intention does not need to be spoken aloud. The orientation of the heart is what counts.

  2. 2

    Begin with Bismillah

Recite Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem. This is how Darood E Taj traditionally opens and how most acts of worship begin in Islamic practice.

  3. 3

Read the Arabic or the transliteration

If you read Arabic, recite the original text. If not, the Roman transliteration on this page gives you the pronunciation. The act of sending Salawat is what matters, and over time it is worth learning the Arabic itself.

  4. 4

    Read the meaning alongside

Open the Urdu, English, Hindi or Telugu translation as you read. Knowing what the words mean changes how they land.

  5. 5

    Make dua afterward

When you finish, make your personal duas. Scholars recommend surrounding every dua with Salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ.

  6. 6

Keep a count and build the habit

Use the reading tracker on this page to record each reading. Once a day is enough. The people who keep returning to this page are the ones who made it a small, fixed part of their day.

The text describes his sacred attributes, his night journey to Allah, and calls on believers to send blessings upon him.

How many times should I read Darood E Taj?

There is no fixed number prescribed in Islamic texts specifically for Darood E Taj. Many scholars recommend reading it at least once daily, preferably after Fajr prayer or after any obligatory Salah. Why is it spelled so many ways: Darood, Durood, Drood, Salawat, Taj, Taaj?

The name is transliterated from Arabic, Persian and Urdu, so spellings vary. Darood, Durood and Drood all come from the Persian dorud and mean a prayer of blessings. Salawat is the Arabic plural of salah. Taj and Taaj are both the word for Crown, and in Urdu script it is written درود تاج. You may also see Darood Taj, Durood-e-Taj, Salawat Taj and Taj Salawat. They all refer to the same Salawat.
