Dua before sleeping in Arabic with Roman, Urdu and English translation: the Prophet’s duas at bedtime and on waking, each with its hadith source and grading.
By the Darood E Taj project · Arabic checked against several digital editions · Last updated
The Prophet ﷺ had a way of going to sleep: he cleaned his bed, recited certain surahs, remembered Allah and made short duas. This page collects the ones that are in the hadith books, each with its source, in Arabic with Roman, Urdu and English.
Every Arabic text on this page was compared across independent digital editions, letter by letter and vowel by vowel. Each dua names its book and gives the grading as the scholars gave it.
What the Prophet ﷺ did before sleeping
These are the actions reported in the sound hadith, with their books.
- He dusted off the bed with the edge of his garment before lying down, saying he does not know what came onto it (Sahih al-Bukhari 6320 and Sahih Muslim, HadeethEnc no. 6034).
- He put his right hand under his cheek (Sunan Abi Dawud 5045).
- He cupped his hands, blew into them, recited Surah al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq and an-Nas, and wiped over his body, three times (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017; see the page on the 4 Qul).
- He recited Ayat al-Kursi; the Prophet ﷺ confirmed that a guardian from Allah stays with the one who recites it at bedtime until morning (Sahih al-Bukhari 2311; see the page on Ayatul Kursi).
- He taught Fatimah and ‘Ali, when they went to bed, to say “Subhan Allah” thirty-three times, “Alhamdu lillah” thirty-three times and “Allahu akbar” thirty-four times, and said it was better for them than a servant (Sahih al-Bukhari 3113 and Sahih Muslim 2727).
The last two verses of Surah al-Baqarah
The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever recites the last two verses of Surah al-Baqarah at night, they will suffice him (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, HadeethEnc no. 6274).

The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in Allāh and His angels and His books and His messengers, [saying], "We make no distinction between any of His messengers." And they say, "We hear and we obey. [We seek] Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the [final] destination."

Laa yukalliful-laahu nafsan illaa wus'ahaa; lahaa maa kasabat wa 'alaihaa maktasabat; Rabbanaa la tu'aakhiznaa in naseenaaa aw akhtaanaa; Rabbanaa wa laa tahmil-'alainaaa isran kamaa hamaltahoo 'alal-lazeena min qablinaa; Rabbanaa wa laa tuhammilnaa maa laa taaqata lanaa bih wa'fu 'annaa waghfir lanaa warhamnaa; Anta mawlaanaa fansurnaa 'alal qawmil kaafireen
Allāh does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people."

In Your name, my Lord, I lay down my side, and by You I raise it.
