Darood Nariya, also called Salat an-Nariyah or Salat al-Kamilah, is a well-known Salawat on the Prophet ﷺ that asks Allah to untie knots, lift distress and meet needs. It is widely read in Pakistan and India, and many people recite it a set number of times.

It is a composed Salawat. Its words are not from a hadith. This page gives the Arabic as Jamia Banuri Town prints it, with Roman, Urdu and English, and says plainly what the sources say about it.

Darood Nariya

Composed: Written by a scholar or a pious person. It is not a hadith text and not from the Qur’an.

Allahumma salli salatan kamilatan wa sallim salaman tamman ‘ala sayyidina wa mawlana Muhammad

O Allah, send a perfect blessing and a complete peace upon our master and patron Muhammad,

    salatan tanhallu biha al-‘uqad

a blessing by which knots are untied,

    wa tanfariju biha al-kurab

    by which distress is lifted,

    wa tuqda biha al-hawa’ij

    by which needs are met,

wa tunalu biha ar-ragha’ib wa husnul khawatim

by which wishes are reached and a good ending is granted,

    wa yustasqal ghamamu biwajhihil karim

and by whose noble face the clouds are asked for rain,

    wa ‘ala alihi wa sahbihi

and upon his family and his Companions,

    fi kulli lamhatin wa nafas

in every glance and every breath,

    bi‘adadi kulli ma‘lumin laka

as many as everything that is known to You.

  • Another wording of the same Salawat reads “‘ala sayyidina Muhammadin alladhi tanhallu bihi al-‘uqad …” (“the one by whom knots are untied”), with the pronoun returning to the Prophet ﷺ, and it ends “al-khawatim” without the ya. Jamia Banuri Town says reading it that way is also correct. The wording above is the one read in Pakistan.

What the sources say about Darood Nariya

Jamia Banuri Town, in two fatwas, says that the words of Darood Nariya are not established from any hadith of the Prophet ﷺ. It says that reading a Salawat whose words contain nothing polytheistic or corrupt in meaning earns the reward of Salawat, so the reward of Salawat is earned by this one too.

The same fatwas call it a trusted and tested practice (wazifa) of the pious, say that it is used for lawful needs and for relief from hardship, that reciting it 4444 times is more beneficial for the aim, and that no special permission is needed to read it. These are statements about practice, not rulings from the hadith.

Some scholars prefer that only the Salawat narrated in the Sunnah be recited as an act of worship (see the page on Darood Tanjeena for that view). Whichever view you follow, the Darood Ibrahimi remains the Salawat the Prophet ﷺ taught.
